Summers Nurseries

Where Little Dreams Start

Policies & Procedures

Illness and emergency procedures

We would expect you to keep us informed if your child is suffering from any contagious disease. For the benefit of the other children/staff at the nursery you must not allow your child to attend the nursery if they are suffering from a contagious disease which could be passed on during daily activities. Parents must inform us immediately if their child is suffering from a contagious disease.

We would expect you to keep your child at home if:

  • He/she has had vomiting and/or diarrhoea for at least 48 hours after the last episode.
  • Has a deep cough or extreme cold.
  • Has a fever.
  • Is extremely tired, irritable, distressed or inconsolable.
  • Has a throat infection.
  • Head-lice – A child need not be excluded from nursery before the end of the day except in extreme circumstances, and can return after the first treatment has been applied. Parents should regularily check their children for head lice using a special comb from a chemist shop.
  • Rash/Skin Conditions - Children with unexplained rashes will be considered infectious until assessed by their Doctor. If a child develops an unexplained rash whilst at nursery, the parent will be called to collect the child and asked to contact the Doctor. Parents should inform us immediately of any confirmed/suspected contagious disease, and follow the required exclusion period.
  • Conjunctivitis – As displayed, NHS Grampian has a change in guidelines for conjunctivitis to be in line with the national policy. There is no exclusion policy unless there are an increased number of cases, which may result in exclusion. Please note there has been no change to the use of anti-biotics, therefore if your child receives an anti-biotic drop they would still be required to remain excluded from nursery for 24 hours.
  • Antibiotics – A child must remain at home 24 hours after first dosage is given.
  • Chicken Pox – A child must remain at home until lesions are crusted over, and in all cases this will be for no less than 5 days from the onset of the rash.
  • Hand, Foot and Mouth disease - No exclusion, however a child should be kept at home until feeling better.
  • For children to attend nursery they must be descriped as being fit and well.

This is not an exhaustive list but merely a guideline.

These guidelines are from Grampian Health Board, Communicable Disease Control. In the event of an accident we will make every effort to contact you. If necessary we will call an ambulance. Please read and sign the permissions in the Nursery Enrolment Form.

Medication

Parents must complete and sign a medication form filled out daily giving specific details of medicine, dosage and times to be administered explaining the reason that their child is getting the medication. We also have ongoing forms for teething, reflux and a special medication care plans.

Paracetamol can only be administered by the nursery for up to 3 days, after which medical advice must be sought.
